This is an original painting from Sydney's Pop Positive Collection.
As I stand here, reminiscing about the painting I created shortly before our move to Wilmington, a rush of emotions takes over. It was a chaotic period, with the hustle and bustle of buying a new house while trying to sell our place in Charlotte. The canvas reflects that turmoil—a burst of vibrant colors and enigmatic shapes, much like the whirlwind of events unfolding around us.
In the midst of this frenzy, there it is—the image of a fish in mid-flight, breaking free from the water. A symbol of my desire for freedom, for escape from the chaos that surrounded me. It's like the fish was trying to leap into a new phase of life, just like we were, seeking a fresh start in a different city.
The bold and bright colors on the canvas reflect the intensity of that time—both the excitement of new beginnings and the anxiety of uncertainty. Deep blues and sunny oranges mirroring the depths of the unknown we were diving into, while fiery reds reflecting the warmth and comfort of our previous home.
Looking at the fish's abstract form, I see a reflection of myself—confident yet humble, striving for independence amidst the chaos. Cam's work travels kept me company, but at the same time, I felt alone, immersed in the responsibilities of home and taking care of Wilson, who was just six months old then.
In a way, the painting captures the paradox of that time—feeling overwhelmed and yet finding comfort in solitude. It was a weird, introspective period, and the fish's dance-like movement mirrored the delicate balance I was trying to maintain.
Those sharp edges and jagged angles within the fish's form represent the challenges and uncertainties we faced during that transitional phase. The discomfort of leaving the familiar behind, but also the intrigue of embracing the unknown and taking a leap of faith into a new chapter of our lives.
As you, the viewer, gaze at this artwork, I hope you can relate to the sense of chaos and solitude intertwined, the desire for change, and the courage to venture into the unfamiliar. It's a snapshot of a transformative time—a reflection of the journey we were about to embark on, filled with both the allure of new horizons and the complexity of leaving the old behind.
